October was a difficult month for Robuxio Equities, with the portfolio returning -5.1% net. The S&P 500 returned -0.9%, while the Nasdaq-100 fell -6.7% and the 60/40 benchmark gained +0.4%.
Behind the relatively flat S&P 500 was a sharp rotation. Technology and semiconductor stocks sold off heavily, while sectors such as energy, utilities, health care and consumer staples performed strongly.
The portfolio was up around 2.5% after the first week. Most of the monthly loss then came from just three days in the second half of October.
The main pressure came from two sleeves:
Equity mean reversion lost about -2.7%. The strategy continued buying short-term weakness in stocks that were still in longer-term uptrends. In October, many of those stocks were concentrated in semiconductors and technology, and the weakness persisted much longer than usual.
Equity momentum lost about -2.3%. After a strong September, the portfolio still held many of the market’s previous leaders just as they began to reverse.
This created an unusual overlap between two strategies that normally behave much more independently.
Other parts of the portfolio helped offset some of the weakness. Tactical allocation gained about +0.6%, helped by exposure to energy, while real assets trend and short-term tactical were roughly flat.
October was therefore a difficult but understandable regime for the portfolio: a concentrated selloff in previous market leaders while the broader index remained relatively stable.
Importantly, this type of period is not new. Similar weak periods for the dip-buying signals appeared in the historical simulation in May 2019, February 2020 and June 2022. Over the same history, the strategy was positive in roughly two-thirds of all months and in every full year except 2018.
The longer-term picture remains strong.
Over the trailing three years, the portfolio returned +84.2%, compared with +83.3% for the S&P 500 and +53.5% for a 60/40 portfolio.
One difficult month does not change the underlying approach. The portfolio remains diversified across multiple independent sleeves, each designed to perform in different market environments.
